Credit Card companies continually develop and evolve technologies and solutions to ensure we stay one step ahead of the criminal element. One of these solutions is the Card Verification System. The CVN is a security code that is visible, in print, on either the front or the back of all major credit cards. The CVN is uniquely associated with the plastic card that is currently issued to the Cardholder. This number is never printed on a receipt or cardholder statement, nor may it be stored in a merchants' computer system. American Express and Discover programs are known as Card Identification Data (CID), MasterCard refers to the code as CVC2, and Visa as CVV2.
How does CVN work?
When a cardholder selects a card to pay for their purchase, an additional screen will be displayed to ask the customer to provide the CVN from their card. The value is validated during the authorization process. If the value provided by the customer does not match that which is on file it will be declined.
